Justin Monroe

NICKNAME:
Splash

I’M FROM:
Brooklyn, New York

WORK AFFILIATION:
Senior Editor, Complex Media (magazine & website)

DEFINING CAREER MOMENT:
In terms of writing, interviewing Killer Mike about his mom’s suicide attempt. That was one of the more poignant sit-downs I’ve had with someone, and it spoke to my ability to get people to trust me and open up. Also, it’s not a “moment,” but in terms of editing/managing, in 2011, I built Complex’s Pop Culture channel into a numbers-getting, respected go-to site for interviews, criticism, and news related to movies, TV, comics, and books.

I GOT MY START WHEN:
Fresh out of college, I began interning at Mass Appeal Magazine in 2002.

CAREER ASPIRATIONS:
To write as my primary profession.

BEFORE IT’S ALL SAID AND DONE, I WANT MY LEGACY TO BE:
Quality writing that entertains and moves people.

“GO TO” MOVE ON THE BASKETBALL COURT:
Annoying defense probably isn’t a “go to” move, so I have to say a mid range pull-up jumper or spinning fadeaway jumper on the baseline.

MY MOST MEMORABLE BASKETBALL MOMENT EVER WAS:
At a local YMCA, shutting down a bigger, stronger opponent who thought he was going to dominate me, irritating him to the point that he wanted to fight.

I FELL IN LOVE WITH BASKETBALL WHEN:
Watching the NY Knicks of the 1990s do battle with Jordan’s Bulls, Reggie’s Pacers, and Hakeem’s Rockets.
